Puffin Tour
Join us for a 1.5-hour boat trip from Grundarfjörður to Melrakkaey Island, home to a lively colony of Atlantic puffins and a variety of other seabirds.
As we sail around the island, you’ll have the chance to observe puffins in their natural environment, along with the many other birds that nest and feed in the waters around Breiðafjörður. During the summer breeding season, puffins return to land after spending the winter out at sea, bringing their colourful bills and distinctive markings back to Iceland’s coastline.
With spectacular views of the surrounding Snæfellsnes landscape, this family-friendly trip is a wonderful way to experience the birdlife of West Iceland from the sea.
Description
Set out from Grundarfjörður Harbour and sail to Melrakkaey Island, home to a lively colony of Atlantic puffins and a variety of other seabirds.
During the tour, we cruise around the island to observe puffins in their natural environment and learn more about the birdlife found along the Snæfellsnes coastline. During the summer breeding season, puffins return to land after spending the winter out at sea, bringing their distinctive colourful bills and markings back to Iceland.
The scenery is an important part of the experience too. As we sail along the coast, you’ll have spectacular views of Kirkjufell mountain from a different perspective and the landscapes surrounding the Snæfellsnes Peninsula.
We approach Melrakkaey protected area and its birdlife with care and respect, keeping our distance and allowing the birds to behave naturally without unnecessary disturbance.
Important information
All departures are subject to weather conditions and minimum booking numbers. Because we are observing wild animals in a protected natural area, we approach the birdlife respectfully, keeping our distance and allowing the birds to behave naturally without unnecessary disturbance.

Why is Melrakkaey Island a great place for puffin and bird watching?
Melrakkaey Island, just off the coast of Grundarfjörður, is home to a lively colony of Atlantic puffins and many other seabirds. The island’s location in Breiðafjörður makes it an excellent place to experience Iceland’s rich coastal birdlife from the sea. Our puffin tour also offers a more intimate experience than some of Iceland’s busier bird-watching destinations, with fewer boats and visitors around the island.
Rather than simply ticking puffins off a list, the tour gives you time to watch their natural behaviour and learn about the many seabirds that share this part of Iceland’s coastline.
Meet the Atlantic Puffin
Atlantic puffins spend the winter far out in the North Atlantic, living at sea and feeding through the colder months. Around May, they begin returning to Iceland and gathering near their breeding colonies. Spring is a busy time for puffins as they reunite with their partners, prepare their nesting sites and begin the breeding season.
Puffins are remarkably loyal to their breeding grounds and often return to the same place year after year. They usually raise just one puffling each season. Although puffins generally form long-term pairs, they do not necessarily spend the winter together. They meet again at the breeding colony when spring arrives.
One of the most recognisable sights during the breeding season is a puffin returning with a beak full of fish. Their beaks have special backward-facing structures that help them hold several small fish at once, allowing them to carry food back to their chick. Some puffins have been recorded carrying more than a dozen fish in a single trip!
And that colourful beak? It is largely a breeding-season look. During the winter, puffins lose much of the bright colour in their beak and facial markings, becoming much duller and more grey. As spring arrives and the breeding season begins, their striking orange, blue and yellow colours return — almost as if they are dressing up for summer.
Puffins are also excellent underwater hunters. They use their wings to effectively “fly” underwater while chasing small fish, and can dive to depths of up to 60 metres in search of food! Watching them disappear beneath the surface and reappear with a mouthful of fish is one of the highlights of the breeding season.
Raising a puffling is a demanding job. The chick needs to be fed enough during its short time in the nest before it is ready to leave. In recent years, several Atlantic puffin colonies have experienced significant declines. One important factor is the availability of food close to breeding colonies, which can make it harder for adult puffins to raise a healthy chick.
Protecting Puffins
Atlantic puffins are facing increasing pressures in parts of their range, and their populations have declined in several areas. We believe that enjoying puffins in their natural environment should go hand in hand with protecting them.
For this reason, we ask our guests not to support puffin hunting by eating puffin meat while in Iceland. Puffins are a vulnerable species, and we would like to see greater protection for these remarkable birds and an end to puffin hunting in Iceland.
