Orca and Whale Tour
Along the Snæfellsnes Peninsula coastline, you have the best chance in Iceland to encounter two of the ocean’s top predators: orcas and sperm whales, each during their respective seasons.
Late winter and spring are particularly important for these species, while humpback whales, minke whales, and white-beaked dolphins may also be seen throughout the season, especially later in summer and into autumn.
Join our whale watching tour from Ólafsvík and experience the rich marine life of Breiðafjörður in the wild.
Description
Set out from the small fishing village of Ólafsvík and explore the productive waters of Breiðafjörður with our experienced crew and expert wildlife guides.
During the tour, we search for whales and dolphins while sharing insights into their behaviour, biology and the marine ecosystem around Snæfellsnes. Late spring and summer also brings rich birdlife, including atlantic puffins.
The scenery is part of the experience too, with the coastline of the Snæfellsnes Peninsula, surrounding mountains and the Snæfellsjökull Glacier providing a spectacular backdrop on clear days.
At Láki Tours, animal welfare and conservation are at the heart of every trip. We follow Code of Conduct for responsible whale watching practices, approaching wildlife slowly and carefully, keeping a respectful distance and allowing each encounter to unfold on the animals’ terms.

Whale guarantee: If no whales or dolphins are sighted, you will receive a complimentary ticket valid for another available tour.

What makes Ólafsvík one of the best places for whale watching in Iceland?
There are numerous features that make Snaefellsnes to one of the best regions for whale watching in Iceland. For many travelers, it is a heartfelt wish to experience killer whales, also known as orcas in the wild. Snaefellsnes is the only place in Iceland where orcas are regularly spotted on whale watching tours. The orcas are most frequently sighted between the months of March and June. By August and September we are mostly watching different species though the orcas sometimes show up into August.
Unique to Snaefellsnes in spring and summer is also the variety of different whale species that we can see on our whale watching tours. We regularly observe several species of whales on just one tour. On our whale tours from Ólafsvík between March and July, we can spot species such as orcas, humpback whales, sperm whales, pilot whales, Minke whales, white-beaked dolphins, and, with great luck, even blue whales. See here for more information about whale watching from Ólafsvík sightings statistics and discover the whales and dolphins you may encounter in the waters of Breiðafjörður.
Sustainable whale watching in Snaefellsnes
Láki Tours offers responsible whale watching from Ólafsvík on the Snæfellsnes Peninsula, with animal welfare at the heart of every tour. We follow strict responsible whale watching guidelines and work with experienced captains and knowledgeable guides to minimise disturbance and allow encounters to unfold on the animals’ terms. We are also committed to whale conservation and collaborate closely with the non-profit organisation Orca Guardians Iceland.
As the only whale watching operator based in Snæfellsnes, we operate with just one vessel from Ólafsvík. This allows us to offer a small-scale and more personal experience in the waters of Breiðafjörður, without multiple whale watching boats gathering around the same whale or group of orcas.
Our aim is not only to show guests Iceland’s whales and dolphins, but also to help them understand the animals they encounter. Our passionate guides share their knowledge about cetacean behaviour, biology, conservation and the challenges these animals face, helping each tour become both a wildlife experience and an opportunity to learn.
