WHALE WATCHING WESTFJORDS
29/06/2017: On three tours today out of Hólmavík we saw a number of humpbacks on each tour. There were at least six humback whales moving around in Steingrímsfjörður today, as we got photos of six different whales during the day. The way we identify individual humpback whales is by the black and white patterns on the underside of their tail. Each whale has a pattern as unique as our fingerprints. Using this benign form of research we can follow whales as they move around the feeding grounds of Iceland, and even to their breeding grounds, mostly for our humpbacks, off the Dominican Republic. This is a non-invasive form of research for whales which is used for various species all around the world. Judith (Tour guide)
